Summer Tips from CMCH: Montessori at Home, Fun in the Sun, and Staying Safe

Summer is here! With school on pause and longer days ahead, many of us are thinking: How do I keep my kids happy, busy, and maybe even learning a little? Whether you're traveling or staying close to home, we’ve put together some easy, meaningful ideas to carry the Montessori mindset into your summer—and keep things fun (and safe!) along the way.

Montessori at Home—Simple, Doable Ideas

You don’t need shelves full of materials to create a Montessori-inspired environment at home. Here are a few ways to keep that independence and purpose flowing:

  • Let them help: Invite your child to pour their own water, spread cream cheese on a bagel, or help fold small towels. It might be messy, and it might slow you down a little, but it’s worth it. A child will always prefer to be involved rather than distracted!

  • Rotate toys: Keep out just a few activities at a time—things like puzzles, lacing cards, simple art supplies—and swap them out weekly to keep interest fresh.

  • Keep a rhythm: A loose routine gives kids comfort, even in summer. You don’t need a tight schedule—but morning outdoor time, lunch, nap, quiet time? That’s golden.

Fun Summer Activities

Need some inspiration? Here are some easy ideas we love:

  • Nature baskets: Head outside and collect leaves, rocks, or flowers—then sort, wash, or paint with them.

  • Water fun: Buckets, cups, and a hose = instant sensory play. Add a sponge and have a “car wash” for toy trucks or bikes.

  • Make popsicles: Blend fruit and yogurt and let your child pour them into molds. Waiting for them to freeze is part of the fun.

  • Ocean sensory bin: Fill a bin with water, ice, or even rice and add seashells or ocean toys.

  • Sidewalk chalk art gallery: Give your child a “space” to decorate outside—invite neighbors or siblings for a “gallery walk.”

  • Make a Playdate with classmates! The Playground App will be accessible all summer, which means you can contact anyone in school - let the playdates commence!

Quick Safety Reminders

A few good habits go a long way:

  • Sunscreen first thing, and don’t forget to reapply if you’re out for a while.

  • Hydrate often, especially in that hot midday sun.

  • Supervise all water play, even the shallow stuff.

  • Shoes outside—you’d be surprised how hot the pavement (or how sharp a stick!) can be.

From all of us at CMCH, thank you for an incredible year. It’s been a gift to watch your children grow, and we’re so grateful to be part of your family’s journey.

Wishing you a summer filled with joy, rest, and lots of giggles.
We can’t wait to see you again soon!

With love,
The CMCH Team
